Prof. Milena Georgieva on how AI is helping longevity, in an interview with DEV.BG
Ahead of the FEBulous Journey event, Epix AI’s co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer spoke to DEV.BG about artificial intelligence, science and living longer in good health.
In an interview with DEV.BG, Prof. Milena Georgieva, co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Epix AI, talked about where artificial intelligence and health meet. The interview was published ahead of her talk at FEBulous Journey, an event organised by the Women in Entrepreneurship in Bulgaria Foundation in Sofia on 22 November 2024.
She explained that AI became essential to biomedicine once researchers had gathered more genetic, epigenetic and biochemical data than people could process on their own. In science, she said, the real challenge is the quality of the data that goes into these systems, so that the solutions they produce are accurate.
Asked how the world might look in 2050, she was clear that biology is too complex for a cure for every disease, and that biological immortality is unlikely. The better question is how to live longer in good health, and that depends on prevention of chronic, non-communicable disease and on reliable ways to measure biological aging.
She also pointed out that Bulgaria ranks first for deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer, conditions linked to accelerated biological aging and largely preventable. By measuring biological age and helping prevent age-related disease, companies like Epix AI can have a real impact on preventive medicine.
